The waters are clear, the sand is soft, and the landscapes surrounding the beaches are simply breathtaking. If you are a beach lover, Maui should definitely be at the top of your list.

It’s no secret that Maui is the most expensive Hawaiian island. But with that expense comes luxury and indulgence.
Maui is home to some of the most luxurious resorts in Hawaii, including the Four Seasons Maui, The Grand Wailea, and the Ritz Carlton Kapalua. These resorts offer top-notch amenities, stunning views, and impeccable service.

We have snorkeled quite a bit on the Hawaiian Islands, and Maui is where we don’t have to try too hard to see marine life. The first time I snorkeled here, I saw the most enormous green sea turtle I had ever seen. It was just swimming around in the shallow waters, utterly unbothered by our presence.
5. You Are Visiting During Whale Season
From December to April, thousands of humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii to mate and give birth. This makes for incredible whale-watching opportunities—you can even spot them from the shore on Maui!
Out of all the islands we have visited, Maui offers the best whale-watching experience. Although we have been able to spot whales from shore without leaving our hotel, we recommend taking a whale-watching tour for a more up-close encounter.
There were times on Oahu, Kauai, and The Big Island when we tried to spot whales from the shore but had no luck. Sometimes, we even took tours and still didn’t see any whales. So, if whale watching is at the top of your list, Maui is the island to visit during whale season.
6. You Want to Visit Haleakala National Park
Haleakala National Park is a must-see when you’re on Maui. It towers over 10,000 feet high, giving you a view that’s hard to beat anywhere else on the island!
The sunrise at Haleakala is a popular tourist activity, and for good reason. Watching the sun rise above the clouds from such a high vantage point is an otherworldly experience.
However, we recommend visiting during sunset if you’re not a morning person or want to avoid dealing with the crowds. The views and the sunset colors are just as breathtaking.
Beyond the stunning views, there are plenty of hiking trails to explore in Haleakala National Park. You can even hike to the famous “Seven Sacred Pools,” the Ohe’o Gulch.
7. The Famous Black Sand Beach on Maui is on Your Bucket List
If you want to see a black sand beach but do not want to go to the Big Island, then Maui is the perfect place for you. The famous black sand beach, Wai’anapanapa State Park, is located on the Road to Hana and is a must-see attraction.
This popular tourist activity often gets crowded, but it’s worth the visit. Reservations are now required to access the park, so plan ahead and book your spot.
I remember our first time here, we showed up without a reservation, and sadly, they didn’t let us in. We had to drive back the next day, but it was worth it!
8. You Want to Drive the Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is a famous scenic drive that winds through lush rainforests, past waterfalls, and stunning coastal views. While the drive can be challenging due to its narrow roads and sharp turns, it’s worth it for the beautiful scenery.
We recommend starting the drive early in the morning to avoid traffic and give yourself plenty of time to stop and explore. Remember to pack snacks and water for the journey.
If you don’t feel comfortable driving yourself, you can also take tours. These tours include a knowledgeable guide who points out all the must-see spots and shares interesting facts about the area.
Is Maui Really That Great?
With all good things, there are always some downsides. Maui can be pretty expensive, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. Also, during peak tourist seasons, the island can get busy and crowded but nowhere near as crowded as Oahu.
However, these minor drawbacks are overshadowed by the beauty and adventures awaiting you on Maui. It just depends on what you are looking for during your vacation!
