    1. You Want the Best of Both Worlds

Oahu was the first Hawaiian Island we visited, and we chose it simply because it has the city, mountains, and the beach. And for some travelers, that’s all they need to know.

Oahu offers a perfect blend of city life and stunning natural beauty, making it ideal for those who want to experience both worlds in one trip.

On one hand, you have the lively city of Honolulu with its vibrant nightlife, world-class shopping, and diverse dining options, and on the other you have the breathtaking landscapes of the Windward Side and the North Shore, with their famous lush rainforests and famous surf breaks.

But Oahu also offers a variety of experiences in between, such as hiking to waterfalls, snorkeling with sea turtles, and exploring historical sites like Pearl Harbor.

We come from a big city, so we crave the energy and convenience of urban life, but we also love being surrounded by nature. And Oahu gives us the best of both.

    2. You’re a History Buff

Oahu is also rich in history and culture, making it the perfect destination for those who love to learn while they travel. From the Pearl Harbor Memorial to the Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the United States, there are plenty of historical sites to explore.

For a more immersive experience, consider visiting one of Oahu’s many cultural sites, such as the Polynesian Cultural Center or the Bishop Museum. These centers offer interactive exhibits and demonstrations that showcase the history and traditions of Hawaii and its people.

And don’t forget to try some traditional Hawaiian cuisine while exploring the island’s history. From poi to kalua pork, there are plenty of options.

    3. You’re a Foodie

Oahu is often referred to as the “culinary capital” of Hawaii, and for good reason. The island offers an incredible array of dining options that cater to every taste and budget.

We have been blessed enough to try some of the best restaurants in Waikiki and all of Oahu, and we can confidently say that the food scene on this island is top-notch. You just have to know where to go, including some of the local spots.

From fresh seafood to mouth-watering Hawaiian dishes, there is something for everyone. And don’t forget about the famous Hawaiian shave ice and poke bowls – two must-try local favorites.

Plus, Oahu is home to a diverse mix of cultures, which means you can also find excellent Japanese, Korean, and Filipino cuisine.

And let’s not forget about the trendy food trucks that offer unique and delicious eats at a more affordable price. Our favorite food trucks are on the North Shore, but Waikiki now has food trucks, too.

Oh, and remember to try Zippy’s, a local favorite and one of our top quick-and-easy restaurants!

    4. You Love Outdoor Adventures

If you’re an adventure seeker, Oahu has plenty to offer. There’s no shortage of outdoor activities, from hiking to waterfalls and scenic mountain views to snorkeling with sea turtles and surfing on some of the world’s most famous breaks.

As a side note, we do not recommend surfing on the North Shore unless you are a very experienced surfer. The waves here are not meant for beginners. However, if you are a beginner, we recommend sticking to Waikiki.

Our favorite hikes are the Lanikai Pillbox Trail and Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail. Both offer stunning views!

If you love snorkeling, Hanauma Bay is a great place to snorkel on the island. The protected marine life conservation area has perfect blue waters filled with colorful fish and other marine life.

    5. You Love Shopping and Nightlife

Oahu also has something for those who enjoy shopping and a vibrant nightlife. The famous Ala Moana Center offers many shops and restaurants, perfect for a day of retail therapy.

If you stay in Waikiki, you don’t have to leave the area to shop and dine. Kalakaua Avenue, the main strip in Waikiki, has high-end designer stores, local boutiques, and delicious restaurants.

And when the sun goes down, Waikiki comes alive with various nightlife options. From rooftop bars to live music venues, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

    6. You Want Family-Friendly Fun

If you’re traveling with kids, Oahu has plenty of family-friendly activities to entertain everyone. The Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium are popular attractions for kids.

For a more adrenaline-filled experience, Kualoa Ranch has multiple activities that are perfect for the whole family.

Oahu also has the best family-friendly accommodations, such as the Disney Aulani Resort, Turtle Bay Resort, and Wai Kai, which offer a variety of activities for kids.

And, of course, no trip to Oahu would be complete without a visit to one of the island’s beautiful beaches. Spend the day swimming in the ocean or simply relaxing and soaking up the sun.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon, surrounded by towering hotels and palms, offers a peaceful retreat with people enjoying various water activities.

    7. You’re a Budget Traveler

We all know a trip to Hawaii can be expensive, but there are still ways to make it budget-friendly. Oahu is the cheapest Hawaiian Island to visit, with plenty of affordable accommodations and activities.

Consider staying in a vacation rental or hostel instead of a fancy resort. Try local plate lunches or farmers’ markets for delicious and inexpensive food.

    Is Oahu Really That Great?

With all good things, there are always some criticisms. Some might argue that Oahu is too crowded and touristy and that the island has lost its authentic Hawaiian charm.

However, with proper planning and research, you can still find secluded spots away from the crowds to experience a more peaceful side of Oahu.

With all that being said, we love Oahu for its diverse and abundant activities, stunning beaches, and family-friendly atmosphere. It truly offers something for everyone, making it the perfect destination! But the decision is ultimately up to you.

If you are still on the fence, here is a separate article discussing why Oahu might NOT be the best island for you.
